Your questions answered: Are outdoor or farm-based services right for me and my kid?

As I’ve gotten back to my roots and started offering farm-based sessions (click here to learn more about why I started offering these sessions), I have received messages, phone calls, and even social media DMs asking if this type of service is right for them.  Here are three things to consider when you are thinking about farm based sessions:

First question to ask yourself when considering farm services: Do I want to be there?

If you, as the adult, can’t stand to be outdoors or on a farm, I would suggest considering other options.  This is because in a therapeutic or coaching setting, you are going to need to be involved to a degree.  If you don’t want to be there, are allergic to everything, or are generally miserable, this will not be a therapeutic setting.

There are ways to get around this, like having another adult join the sessions or choosing another setting for therapy and giving your child recreational opportunities for outdoors or farm interactions instead.

Second question to ask yourself when considering farm services: Does my child want to be there?

If your child is fearful of the outdoors or has terrible allergies, this may not be the best fit. A little hesitant or unsure we can work with, but miserable kids won’t get the most out of outdoor sessions.

This can be really hard if you see the value in having your child spend time learning and living outdoors and want to give them the opportunity.  You may want this more than they do.  Some things we can do are to schedule shorter sessions and find other recreational outdoor activities to add to your life that better fit your child’s needs.

Third question to ask yourself when considering farm services: Does the provider have the experience and the set-up you need to succeed?

If you are looking for horse-based OT services, for example, I would not be the right provider but I have some referrals that I would be happy to make. As well, if you want a location that only has plants and petting-zoo animals or has specialized equipment for supporting specific disabilities, I may not be the right provider but I know others who might just be!

Are you still unsure if this type of service is the right fit?
